Athenian Muse

Athens, Greece is a city close to my heart. My partner of five years was born and raised in the unique, bustling and historic city and we have spent some amazing time exploring the city together. Next year, we plan on spending a few months in the city, which is what inspired me to conceptualise an Athenian bridal-inspired shoot.

I have always been inspired by bridal fashion, especially the tradition and individuality it represents. I believe in wearing what makes you feel your best and love that modern fashion is adapting and diversifying, yet I am equally in love with the classic styles.

I reached out to contemporary bridal designer Alexandra Kapsala to shoot some of her unique and incredibly special designs. Pictured in this blog is a bespoke dress that exudes classicality whilst including motifs of modern design such as the Basque waist and asymmetrical skirt.

The Vision Behind the Shoot

I wanted this shoot to exude elegance and femininity. I wanted Eleni, our beautiful model to be bathed in the golden glow of the Mediterranean sun giving an angelic glow to my imagery. I was inspired by the greek architectural motifs, specifically the marble floors and pillars. I wanted to portray bridal portraits post-intimate ceremony. We took the above photos outside the Catholic Cathedral Basilica of St. Dionysius the Areopagite, a stunning Cathedral on Panepistimiou Street in central Athens.

Location Highlights

Panepistimiou Street is the home to not only the aforementioned Cathedral but The Academy of Athens and the National Library of Athens.

The Academy is a breathtaking piece of neoclassical architecture and one of my favorite spots in the city. Designed by Theophil Hansen in the 19th century, it’s part of the “Neoclassical Trilogy” alongside the National Library and the University of Athens. The building is grand yet inviting, with statues of Socrates and Plato at the entrance and Athena and Apollo standing tall above. Inside, the halls are beautifully decorated with intricate frescoes, making it a perfect mix of architectural beauty and a celebration of Greece’s rich intellectual history.

Styling and Details

Bespoke gown: Alexandra Kapsala: perfect for the modern bride, Alexandra’s work exudes effortless elegance, making her an ideal choice for our Athens bridal editorial. Every detail was meticulously planned to create a cohesive narrative, highlighting the harmonious blend of ancient and modern Athens.

Accessories: We opted for classic pearls to frame Eleni’s natural beauty without detracting from her, nor the gown.

Makeup and hair: By Eleni, natural and enhancing with a soft, pearly eyeshadow, healthy glowing skin and natural glossed lips.

Why Athens Inspires Me

Athens has a unique way of stirring the creative soul. Perhaps it’s the golden light that seems to cast everything in a romantic glow, or the layers of history that remind you of the countless love stories this city has witnessed. Whatever it is, I always leave Athens feeling inspired, eager to capture more.

This bridal editorial is a reflection of everything I love about photographing in Athens: the connection between place and story, the timeless beauty, and the privilege of working in such a remarkable setting.
